Friday, November 18, 2022, Issue 272: Happy Friday....What is on your needles?

It is cold out there today so it really feels like sweater weather out there! We are not always wearing out hand knits during our Tuesday Knit Afternoons but because it is sweater weather, this week six of the group had on either a hand knit sweater or skirt!

We are not always wearing our hand knits but this past Tuesday at our Knit Afternoon, 6 of us were!

From left to right: Debbie (Debbiegodfrey) is wearing her Koivua by Caitlin Hunter; Jocelyne (jocblais) is wearing her Ranunculus by Midori Hirose; Marilyn is wearing her knit skirt (not sure of the pattern); me (sue2knits) I am wearing Fireworks by Marie Green and Swirl Skirt by AnneLena Mattison; Jan (mrsjanknits) is wearing Compass by tincanknits; and Debbie (swifty849) is wearing her Elizabeth the First from Alice Starmore’s Tudor Roses Book.

Just before we were leaving, Debbie said she had her hat which I didn’t get a photo of and Jan put on her mitts! The pattern is The World’s Simplest Mittens by tincanknits.

Sometimes winter catches you by surprise and you need a pair of mittens, quick! These are a perfect quick knit or a blank canvas for mitten fun!

Sometimes winter catches you by surprise and you need a pair of mittens, quick! These are a perfect quick knit or a blank canvas for mitten fun! The World’s Simplest Mittens by tincanknits is sized for toddler (child, adult S, M, L) and includes the instructions for any weight and gauge of yarn.

Alexa of tincanknits made this pair following the worsted weight instructions holding a strand of worsted weight yarn held double with a strand of mohair.

Ysolda Teague’s Musselburgh is a favourite hat pattern that includes 9 gauges for yarn weights between light fingering and DK and 6 sizes.

Ysolda Teague’s Musselburgh is a favourite hat pattern that includes 9 gauges for yarn weights between light fingering and DK and 6 sizes. Are you an adventurous beginner looking to grow your skills? Use the pattern to learn how to knit a hat from the top-down: clear directions and linked tutorials are included.

In what is essentially a three step project you’ll start with a centre-out cast-on and increase for the first crown; the next part is a beautifully meditative knit (perfect for those zoom calls!) of stockinette in the round; finally, you will finish off the hat by mirroring the initial shaping with decreases. This simple canvas is perfect for exploring your creativity through yarn choice, stripes or colour blocking. The hat is fully reversible, so working each half in a different colour or stripe sequence can turn it into two completely different hats in one.

Yarn
Heavy laceweight to DK weight yarn.
Exact yardage will depend on size, gauge and yarn used.

130 - 610 yards (119 - 558 m)

Needles
Dpns or circulars for your preferred method of working small circumferences in the round
16” / 40cm circular (for sizes above baby)
Choose a size based on your knowledge of your personal tension and the recommended needle size for your yarn. If using sock yarn use a needle a couple of sizes larger than you would use for socks.

Gauge
Pattern includes directions for gauges of 9, 8.5, 8, 7.5, 7, 6.5, 6, 5.5 and 5 stitches per inch / 2.5cm

Directions are given for measuring the gauge while working the hat, but if you prefer to swatch do so in the round.

My Easy V by Caitlin Hunter is finished and blocked that I knit using my hand spun yarn!

Here’s the back…

Here’s the back…I knit the size 3 and the before and after blocking measurements are pretty close. My sleeve cuffs are 7.5 inches so snug to my wrists the way I like them. I knit my sleeves to a 15 inch length and the body length is 11 inches which on me is not cropped. I have not calculated the spun yardage that I used yet.
