It is the Friday before the long weekend and it is unbelievably hot outside and a little overcast. Although it is supposed to get a little cooler over the next few days, it is still going to feel hot! If you are lucky enough to have a pool, have you opened it yet so you can cool off? We don't but I do have the gazebo on our deck so I think I will sit, relax and knit if I get the chance.
Marie Greene at Olive Knits:
Seven years ago I challenged myself to knit a sweater over a long weekend – 4th of July weekend, in fact. Honestly, I didn’t even know if it was possible; I’d never knit a sweater in less than a few weeks. But I had a long quiet weekend at my disposal, and a sweater I really wanted to knit. Could I do it? I shared my personal goal with my knitting community, and the energy of holding myself accountable to an audience, I did it! I had no idea that my silly personal challenge would become an annual event drawing together a remarkable community of knitters from around the globe. This is not really about knitting a sweater in four days, but about challenging your own ideas about how long it takes to knit a sweater. This knitalong is about finishing a sweater faster than you thought you could — and doing it with the energy, enthusiasm, and the support of community.
How do you add a new sweater to your wardrobe in just about a week? You join Sailaway- the 6th Annual 4 Day KAL with Olive Knits, of course! There are OODLES of yarn shops and dyers participating to bring you drool-worthy yarn + some LYS activities with participating shops, in select locations. They’ll be giving away 50+ prizes from your favorite shops and yarnies throughout the month of July while we knit along together. All the details will be provided in the pattern pre-order when the time comes.
- Sailaway is a three color circular yoke cardigan, knit from the top down, with options to use either DK or worsted weight yarn.
- Pattern pre-order (with swatching details) begins Thursday, May 26th at Olive Knits and on Ravelry. The pattern will be offered at a discounted price until June 6. Save the Date!!
- Full pattern release is July 1. Do you have to knit your sweater in four days? NO. There will be KAL giveaways and online events throughout the month of July.
Sizes — 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
The amount of ease will depend on your measurements and the size you choose (based on finished measurements). For help choosing a size, please visit this blog post.
Gauge — This pattern is written to work for either DK or worsted weight at the following gauges
- DK – 21 st and 30 rows in 4 in/10 cm in color/texture pattern with largest needle (test sample knit on US size 6/4mm) blocked
- Worsted weight: 20 stitches and 29 rows in 4 in/10 cm in color/texture pattern with largest needle (test sample knit on US Size 7/4.5mm), blocked
Gauge Note: The slipped stitch pattern makes the rows denser than the stockinette stitch rows. When taken together, the result is an approximate row gauge specified above. Do not fret too much about row gauge.
Yardage — (These estimates translate nicely for both DK and worsted weight, but may vary slightly according to your yarn selection)

Ric Rac by Casapinka knit by Jen (zjewell) for the shop sample!! Yarn is Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in GG Loves Orange and Cosmic Wonder Dust.
Details
Ric Rac is a boomerang shaped shawl, 65” long by 35” at the final border. It is not difficult (intermediate to advanced beginner.) You hold your yarns together and knit every 10 rows.
Materials
Two skeins of fingering weight yarn, 400 yards each. You do not need contrasting skeins for this - and feel free to use variegated, speckled or whatever you like for yarn.
When I weighed the yarn that we had left, we haad 28g remaining of the orange and 30g remaining of the speckled contrast. Translated, that means Jen used 302.4 yards of the orange and 294 yards of the speckle. She used 3.5 mm (US 4) needles. The gauge after blocking was 20 stitches = 4" in stockinette.
Ric Rac was one of the patterns available with the purchase of 2 skeins of yarn on Local Yarn Store Day.
I am more than half finished the short row section on my Coterie Shawl by Jessica Ays! I had hoped that I would be finished by today but this week included work from my previous career for which I still spend time whenever necessary.
Lace does not look it’s beautiful best until after you block it. Maybe next week, I'll be able to include before and after lace shots.
KNIT GROUP AND GALLERY
Congratulations to Karen (kmae64) for winning the draw for the period from January 1 to April 30, 2022!
Michelle brought her finished woven scarf from her first Weaving Workshop using Berroco Summer Sesame. During the workshop, she worked on a scarf using Ashford Meriino Boucle woven double with Berroco Summer Sesame but she decided to start over when she was at home. We were so disappointed that she didn't finish her original because it was gorgeous!
Michelle is wearing the poncho that Elaine (emayea) knit for her using the Ashford Merino Boucle that she did not use in her final woven scarf! Pattern is a combination of inspiration patterns she had!
Jocelyne (jocblais) and Jan (mrsjanknits) are both wearing their Rock It Tees by Tanis Lavallee!
Connie (knitnut246) wearing her Sunshine Coast by Heidi Kirrmaier and her Aviendha Shawl by Melanie Berg.
Susanne took a photo that she put into an app that she used to create her pattern to crochet this blanket for Baxter here!! Yarn is is Berroco Vintage.
Susanne also crocheted the panel inspired by Baxter which she made into a pillow with a fabric back and buttons! Yarn is Berroco Vintage.
Did you know Esther Braithwaite (@estherjoyknits) is local?? Check out all her toys that are sturdy and safe for little hands to hold patterns on Ravelry!
