Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Issue 410: It's fall and sweater weather begins...Happy Wednesday!

It is officially fall but our weather has not made up its mind yet. I find myself starting out in a warmer sweater but having to change into a summer sweater! Are you ready to start cool weather projects?

Jaunty by Andrea Mowry is her new shawl that she hopes will spark your creativity and sense of adventure! Don’t be afraid to play with different yarn weights, adjust the size, and use up your stash. Try different yarn textures, holding multiple strands together, or using handspun for a truly personal touch. The rhythmic stitch pattern offers a soothing flow, while the simple construction and adaptable sizing means you can use what you’ve got. This is definitely a pattern to knit again and again! This shawl is a shallow triangle, knit sideways using Half-Fishermen’s Rib.

-Sample 4 (icy pale blue) Heavy Worsted/Aran - Wingspan - 79”/200.5 cm; Center Depth - 17.5”/44.5 cm

YARN REQUIREMENTS
These are just approximations. Total yarn usage will depend on the yarn you use (fiber content, ply, etc.), your personal gauge, how big you make your shawl and any modifications you may make. Remember, this shawl is perfect for using up odds and ends and playing with different yarn weights and sizes! Keep a scale handy and follow the directions in the notes on pg. 3 to use what you’ve got!

-Sample 1 (Lace/Light Fingering) - Approximately 100 g/450 yds/412 m

-Sample 2 (Sport/Light DK) - Approximately 212 g/670 yds/613 m

-Sample 3 (Worsted) - Approximately 315 g/990 yds/905 m

-Sample 4 (Heavy Worsted/Aran) - Approximately 200 g/524 yds/479 m

SUGGESTED NEEDLES
Needle size will depend on what weight yarn you use to create a fabric you like. Just keep in mind that Half-Fishermen’s rib creates a looser fabric that grows quite a bit with blocking, so it is best to size down with your needles. Here are the needles I used for my samples to get you started:

-Sample 1 (Lace/Light Fingering) - 2.75 mm (US 2) - 32”/80 cm circular recommended

-Sample 2 (Sport/Light DK) - 3.75 mm (US 5) - 32”/80 cm circular recommended

-Sample 3 (Worsted) - 4 mm (US 6) - 32”/80 cm circular recommended

-Sample 4 (Heavy Worsted/Aran) - 4.5 mm (US 7) - 32”/80 cm circular recommended

GAUGE
Totally dependent on your yarn and needle choices. But here are the gauges I worked at to get you started! (Measured over half-fisherman’s rib, after blocking.)

-Sample 1 (Lace/Light Fingering) - 28.5 sts & 52 rows = 4”/10 cm

-Sample 2 (Sport/Light DK) - 25 sts & 36 rows = 4”/10 cm

-Sample 3 (Worsted) - 21 sts & 36 rows = 4”/10 cm

-Sample 4 (Heavy Worsted/Aran) - 18 sts & 32 rows = 4”/10 cm

SUGGESTED YARN
Lang Yarns Infinity, Queensland Collection Rainbow Beach, Schoppel Wolle Starke 6, Berroco Ultra Alpaca

 Winter Artemide by Emma Fassio

Winter Artemide by Emma Fassio is a top-down sweater worked in the round with a lace pattern and a special yoke: at first you work on the shoulder increases (saddle shoulder) and then on the sleeve by creating a line that reminds a traditional sewn yoke.

*This pattern is one that I posted about back in February of 2024 and it was brought back to my attention yesterday!

 Winter Artemide by Emma Fassio

Elegant and modern, it’s perfect on a pair of pants or jeans, for a unique and customized look. It has boxy ease, but it can be easily modified for personal taste and physical proportions. A lace pattern decorates the shoulder line and the final part of the body, donating movements and drape.
I always suggest to try on the work in progress in order to make those customizations that will make the tee the perfect garment that you’ll love to wear.

SIZES
Bust circumference: S(M, L, XL, XXL): 108(118, 123, 138, 143) cm

YARN
890 (1068, 1246, 1424, 1602) m [975 (1170, 1365, 1560, 1755) yards] each of sport weight yarn and mohair to hold together

NOTIONS: tapestry needle to weave in ends, 1 stitch marker M for the beginning of the round, 4 stitch markers m for yoke increases, 4 stitch markers mL for the lace section

NEEDLES: 4.0 mm (US 6) circular knitting needles or of the necessary number for desired gauge

GAUGE: 16 sts x 26 rows in 10 x 10 cm in stockinette stitch

SUGGESTED YARN: The Fibre Co. Cirro (held single or double with mohair), Kelbourne Woolens Andorra  or BC Garn Bio Balance or Garnstudio Drops Flora held double with Garnstudio Drops Kid Silk

Rami Socks by Zanete Knits

Rami Socks by Zanete Knits showcases an all-over colourwork pattern with bold, geometric motifs. This style works beautifully even with subtle colour contrasting colour combinations, so you don’t need high intensity differences to make the design stand out.

Like many of her sock patterns, this one is worked toe-up, featuring a sole gusset and a slip-stitch heel flap, a combination she has come to love for its great fit. The toe-up method also makes it simple to adjust the leg length, giving you the option to knit anything from a short ankle sock to a full knee-high.

To address the reduced stretch that can occur with colourwork, I’ve added a few extra stitches in the leg section, helping the sock slide over your heel more easily while still hugging the foot snugly for a comfy fit.

DIFFICULTY: Intermediate.

SIZES: 1 (2, 3, 4)

FINISHED FOOT CIRCUMFERENCE:
17.5 (20, 22.5, 25) cm
7 (8, 9, 10) inches

GAUGE: 32 sts & 38 rows = 10 cm / 4” in colourwork stockinette in the round, blocked.

YARN: Fingering or sock weight, allow approximately:
Main colour: 205 (255, 305, 355) m / 225 (280, 330, 390) yds
Contrast colour: 125 (150, 180, 210) m / 135 (165, 195, 230) yds

Yarn used in sample (size 2) is 2 skeins of Malabrigo Ultimate Sock (75% superwash merino, 25% nylon; 385 m 420 yds / 100 g); colourways Pearl Ten as main colour (MC) and Rosalinda as contrast colour (CC).

SUGGESTED NEEDLES:
2.0 - 2.25 mm (US 0 - 1), choose the size that achieves the required gauge. These should be circulars or DPNs for small circumference knitting.

I knit the size 5 (115 cm or 45.5 inches) for my first Step by Step Cardigan. I knit the size 4 (105 cm or 41.25 inches) for this one for a less boxy fit.

I added pockets to both of them though because who doesn't like pockets in a cardigan! I used Noro Kompeito in 03 Ichinoseki held double with Rowan Kidsilk Haze but I could have easily used Garnstudio Drops Kid Silk in 01 Off White.

I cast on the Fie Cardigan by Kristin Drysdale

Last weekend, I cast on my Fie Cardigan by Kristin Drysdale. I decided to use Tukuwool DK since I have a lot leftover from the Aallokko by Tiina Huhtaniemi test knit that I did in 2023. I am using the H22 Vala for the yellow and H24 Lehto for the green. I don't have any of 01 Sake left to use but that will be my main colour.

 My Fie Cardigan WIP

This cardigan is knit in the round with 5 added steek stitches in the centre front which is why I am using a wool yarn. I debated over using BC Garn Semilla Melange but decided on the Tukuwool DK so that I could use up some of my leftover stash.

There is a pullover version of the pattern too. The Fie Pullover is a semi-cropped, top-down yoke sweater with seamless construction that Kristin designed specifically for the North Light Fiber Retreat on Block Island back in 2023.

I have been contemplating the Fie Cardigan for a colourwork and steeking class so this will be the sample.
