Friday, May 20 2022, Issue 248: Happy Friday!!

It is the Friday before the long weekend and it is unbelievably hot outside and a little overcast. Although it is supposed to get a little cooler over the next few days, it is still going to feel hot! If you are lucky enough to have a pool, have you opened it yet so you can cool off? We don't but I do have the gazebo on our deck so I think I will sit, relax and knit if I get the chance.

Sailaway tag line!

Marie Greene at Olive Knits:

Seven years ago I challenged myself to knit a sweater over a long weekend – 4th of July weekend, in fact. Honestly, I didn’t even know if it was possible; I’d never knit a sweater in less than a few weeks. But I had a long quiet weekend at my disposal, and a sweater I really wanted to knit. Could I do it? I shared my personal goal with my knitting community, and the energy of holding myself accountable to an audience, I did it! I had no idea that my silly personal challenge would become an annual event drawing together a remarkable community of knitters from around the globe. This is not really about knitting a sweater in four days, but about challenging your own ideas about how long it takes to knit a sweater. This knitalong is about finishing a sweater faster than you thought you could — and doing it with the energy, enthusiasm, and the support of community.

Join in for Sailaway- the 6th Annual 4 Day KAL with Olive Knits

Sizes1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)

The amount of ease will depend on your measurements and the size you choose (based on finished measurements). For help choosing a size, please visit this blog post.

Gauge — This pattern is written to work for either DK or worsted weight at the following gauges

  • DK – 21 st and 30 rows in 4 in/10 cm in color/texture pattern with largest needle (test sample knit on US size 6/4mm) blocked
  • Worsted weight: 20 stitches and 29 rows in 4 in/10 cm in color/texture pattern with largest needle (test sample knit on US Size 7/4.5mm), blocked

Gauge Note: The slipped stitch pattern makes the rows denser than the stockinette stitch rows. When taken together, the result is an approximate row gauge specified above. Do not fret too much about row gauge.

Yardage — (These estimates translate nicely for both DK and worsted weight, but may vary slightly according to your yarn selection)

Jen (zjewell) knit the shop sample of Ric Rac by Casapinka

Details
Ric Rac is a boomerang shaped shawl, 65” long by 35” at the final border. It is not difficult (intermediate to advanced beginner.) You hold your yarns together and knit every 10 rows.

Materials
Two skeins of fingering weight yarn, 400 yards each. You do not need contrasting skeins for this - and feel free to use variegated, speckled or whatever you like for yarn.

When I weighed the yarn that we had left, we haad 28g remaining of the orange and 30g remaining of the speckled contrast. Translated, that means Jen used 302.4 yards of the orange and 294 yards of the speckle. She used 3.5 mm (US 4) needles. The gauge after blocking was 20 stitches = 4" in stockinette.

Michelle brought her finished woven scarf from her first Weaving Workshop using Berroco Summer Sesame. During the workshop, she worked on a scarf using Ashford Meriino Boucle woven double with Berroco Summer Sesame but she decided to start over when she was at home. We were so disappointed that she didn't finish her original because it was gorgeous!
