With the weather being so wet and grey lately, it doesn't exactly feel like the holiday season out but if you are planning to knit gifts and finish them by Christmas, it’s crunch time! There is just over 2 weeks or 17 days until Christmas!
Each week new patterns are released but at this time of year, smaller gift worthy knits that can be knit quickly are wonderful!
Point Edwards Mitts by Fairlight Fibres are like sweaters for your hands! These cuffed mitts can be worn either as fingerless mitts, or with the cuffs unrolled to cover cold fingertips, including the thumbs! They are perfect for winter walks or for driving on cold mornings.
These mitts use simple techniques, like knitting in the round and basic increases to create warm, dense mitts that fit the average woman’s hand. Any DK yarn will work for these mitts.
It is gift knitting time and The Oslo Hat by PetiteKnit is a classic one of you should consider! The Oslo Hat is worked in two strands of yarn held together from the bottom up in stockinette stitch. The first part of the hat is worked on a 40 cm 16 inches circular needle, while the top of the hat is worked either on double-pointed needles or on a circular needle using the Magic Loop technique.
Begin by working a swatch to check that you have the correct gauge.
Sizes: XS (S) M (L) the approx. equivalent to baby (junior/woman) woman (man)
Measurements: Fits head circumference 47-50 (50-55) 55-59 (59-62) cm [18½-19¾ (19¾-21¾) 21¾-23¼ (23¼-24½) inches]
Gauge: 22-23 sts x 32 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) in stockinette stitch on 3.5 mm [US4] needles
Needles: Circular needles: 3.5 mm (US4) / 40 cm (16 inches)
Double-pointed needles: 3.5 mm (US4)
Materials: 420 (630) 630 (630) m [460 yds (690 yds) 690 yds (690 yds)]. Note that two strands of yarn are held together throughout, and that the yardage given is the total yardage needed. If knittting with one strand, you will need half the amount.
There is also the Oslo Hat - Mohair Edition version of the hat.
Twistmas by Espace Tricot is a fun and easy hat pattern featuring twisted rib throughout. The simple stitch pattern creates interesting texture while allowing your beautiful hand-dyed yarns to take center stage. It’s knit with two strands of fingering weight yarn and one strand of a laceweight mohair blend - all held together. Instructions for two versions of the hat are provided - the first one uses one colour for the whole hat while the second one invites you to use your scraps and mini-skeins to create your own “faded” version!
You can also use a strand of DK held double with a strand of mohair or a strand of worsted weight.

Pattern uses knitting, purling, increasing & decreasing, & 3 small whipstitch seams that can be as sloppy as you like! Slippers are then felted to fit and ears are attached last.

WIPs and FOs
Last night I took this photo of my Secret Garden Sweater! Last week, after I separated the body and the sleeves, I made a chart for the increased underarm stitches. I worked 4 rounds but did not like how it looked so I frogged back to cast on the underarm stitches again. At first, I could not wrap my head around how many stitches to cast own if I wanted full repeats instead. I thought - I'm adding 20 stitches for each underarm, wouldn't that make it so much wider? Finally it dawned on me, the pattern has you casting on 15 stitches including a purl stitch for a fake seam. Adding 5 stitches on each side and eliminating the purl stitch, the chart repeats are complete and I have only added approximately 2 inches.
Looks like my row gauge is off! I still have 13 rows remaining of the chart for my Secret Garden Sweater before I get to the stockinette main colour section. Excellent! The finished length will not be cropped.
